Can Dogs Eat Bananas?

Bananas can be a super tasty & nutritious snack for dogs, just as for humans. When given in the right amount & the right form it can be a great treat for dogs of all ages.

Just like most things in life, moderation is key. Bananas have a high fibre content, which is great, but too much fibre can cause stomach distress.

Bananas also have a high sugar content, which can also lead to an upset stomach when consumed in high amounts.

Unlike other fruits, which may have toxic components, every part of a banana is safe for your dog to eat - however caution should be exercised here, while the peel isn't toxic it is hard to digest and may cause a blockage - so we recommend just giving the flesh.

So small amounts of fresh banana flesh can be enjoyed by both you and your dog, but are there any health benefits?

As it turns out, banana is a good natural source of essential nutrients that are important for a dog’s overall immune system, digestive system, and general health. This healthy fruit provides a long list of vitamins & minerals:

  • Vitamin C - is an important antioxidant for dogs that can help reduce potentially harmful free radicals in your pet's body, support healthy ageing, and reduce inflammation.
  • Vitamin B6 - is responsible for glucose generation, red blood cell and nervous system function, hormone regulation, immune response, niacin synthesis, and gene activation.
  • Potassium - aids in the functioning of electrical charges in the heart, nerves, and muscles.
  • Magnesium promotes bone growth and helps the body produce protein and absorb vitamins,

So, can dogs eat banana? Yes, like people, our pets benefit from a diet rich in minimally processed whole foods and it can be fed alongside a balanced nutritious diet.
