5 Tips To Prepare Your Dog for Fireworks Starting TODAY

If you have an anxious or fearful dog that is scared of fireworks then November and December are probably very tough months for them.

If you want to make them feel as comfortable as possible then DO NOT make helping a second thought and don’t leave it too late. You can plan right now to help your dog be less afraid and reactive to fireworks, crackers and general loud noises.

Here are 5 great tips that you can start today

  • Create a safe space (if you don’t already have one) - Having this special spot for your dog to retreat provides an additional level of protection for your pet within the home, especially if you teach them to go there at your command. It’s their own space where they can feel safe, protected and secure.
  • Counter conditioning to loud noises – this is all about helping your dog desensitize by pairing a stimulus with something they enjoy. Get some regular treats and start carrying them around at home, giving one when there is a loud noise or bang that scares or sets them off barking. Don’t give those treats at any other time, only immediately after certain noises. Don’t pass them out for nice behaviours (use something else for that!), and don’t ask for any particular action from your dog when the noise occurs. Just give the treats.
  • Be with them when possible – Your dog will find it more difficult to regulate their emotions if you aren’t there, especially at the beginning. It is NOT wrong to comfort your dog if they need it. In fact, there is no right or wrong, only things that work for your dog’s personality. If they seek you out, give them the attention they want.
  • Try sound masking – Play TV, music or specific low-frequency sounds to mask any sudden loud bangs.
  • Consider using any number of products designed to help calm your dog – There are many different things you can use that are designed to calm and relax your dog. We recommend picking a natural calming chew (not tablet or spray), to use as a tasty treat containing proven ingredients to help calm your pup such as L-theanine, Passionflower & Chamomile. Avoid using ingredients such as melatonin which can cause drowsiness.

There are no set-in-stone rules that will 100% guarantee to help your dog through the firework season, you should try and find the right combination of things that works well for you and your dog.
