6 Tips To Keep Your Dogs Cool & Safe In Summer

For most people and pets, summertime means fun time.
Trips to the beach, more time outdoors are all great bonding experiences with your dog. However, as with most things, caution should be exercised.
Most dogs are sensible when it comes to the heat, but care should be taken to avoid overheating or dehydration.

Here are our top tips for getting the most out of summer with your dog!

  1. Plan Your Walks - Avoid going out when the sun is at its strongest. Early morning and late evening is ideal. Never do it in the middle of the day. When outside, take breaks in the shade and have water available.
  2. Avoid hot surfaces - If you’re out in the sun, try to keep your pet off hot surfaces (they aren't wearing shoes!). Along with giving nasty paw burns, it can also lead to overheating.
  3. Keep them hydrated - If you don't think your dog is getting enough water, you can try to entice them to drink more by dropping a couple of treats into some fresh water
  4. Consider a cooling blanket - Make a safe, cool space they know they can go to if they need it.
  5. Try Different Games - Play time is fun, but you don't want your dog running around too much as this can lead to overheating. Consider introducing some different games to keep your doggo cool and stimulated.

  6. Don't forget the sun cream - Pets like humans can suffer from sunburn. If you are planning to spend a day out in the sun with your furry companion, apply sunscreens every 3-4 hours to the least hair-covered spots: bellies, ears, and nose. Use only sunscreens made specifically for pets (do not shave your pet for summer)

Understand The Symptoms - Dogs can get heatstroke when they can't reduce their body temperature. Watch out for some key symptoms: Heavy panting, Dry or bright red gums, Thick drool, Vomiting/ Diarrhea, Wobbly legs

If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stroke please contact your Vet ASAP.
