Why allergy medication might not be the best choice, and what are the alternatives?

Dogs typically scratch, lick or chew themselves excessively when they have allergies, as opposed to people who tend to sneeze or cough. It's possible that your dog has an allergy to something in their surroundings or the food they eat if their skin is red and itchy.

Itchy and red skin also makes diagnosing and treating allergic conditions even more challenging than they are in people. When humans have allergy symptoms, we can describe them to our doctors in great detail, including when and where we experience them. But your dog is unable to do that; you and your dog's vet will need to collaborate in order to determine what is triggering the problem and how you can provide your dog with allergy relief.

Allergies from the environment (or seaonsal allergies) are a lot more common than food allergies, but it's important to understand the trigger for your pup!

What exactly is an allergic reaction?

An allergic reaction is a response by the immune system to environmental trgigers or foods. Dogs can be allergic to a wide variety of substances.

If your dog has allergies, one of the first things any vet will do is start a course of allergy medication, this might not be the best choice - however you should also discuss options with your vet!

Why might Allergy medications not be the best choice?

Allergy medications may not the best choice for dog allergies. It is because some allergy medications have potential side effects which may not good for the pup's health.

Some of the most common treatments can affect long-term immune health and suppress the natural immune response. They are not intended for long-term use and so it may be more helpful to try and address the root cause, or look for an alternative.

So, What are the alternatives to canine allergy medication?

One of the most effective treatments for dog allergies is the use of immune system boosters and medications that promote immunity. Because these medications naturally strengthen the immune systems of canines, they ultimately result in an improved ability to manage allergy symptoms.

You should discuss any potential treatments with your vet so they can help assess what the best course of action is for your dog's specific situation.
