Ear Infections: Symptoms, Treatments & Preventions

Each of our dogs' remarkable individuality and quirkiness can be seen in their ears, which can be floppy, erect, mismatched, or even shaped like bats. Ears, are a huge part of how dogs communicate. Unfortunately, many dogs are prone to regular infections in the ear.

Ear infections are the second most prevalent cause for dog owners to take their pets to the veterinarian, even though the condition can be easily avoided.

Symptoms of Dog Ear Infections

Most of the canine companions display no symptoms of an ear infection other than an accumulation of wax or fluid secretion in the ear canal, which is indicative of a disease. On the other hand, ear infections can result in significant discomfort, and dogs who are afflicted with them may display symptoms such as:

  • Dark or tarry discharge
  • Excessive head shaking
  • Bad odor
  • Scratching the area around the afflicted ear
  • Crusting or scabs in the ears
  • Red and swollen ear canal
  • Itchiness

Causes of Dogs' ear infections

The dog ear canal is more vertical in form than the human ear; it produces an L-shape that efficiently confines fluids within the ear canal. As a direct consequence of this, dogs have an increased risk of developing ear infections. Infections in the ear can be brought on by bacteria, yeast, or sometimes a combination of multiple types of bacteria. Other than that, infections of the ear in your dog can be brought on by several other different things, which include the following:

  • Mites
  • Allergies
  • Moisture
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Excessive wax accumulation
  • Excessive cleaning
  • An ear canal injury
  • Thyroid illness
  • Foreign bodies

Treatment

Your veterinarian will clean your dog's ears with a medicated ear cleaner. In addition, your vet may advise you to clean your dog’s ears at home. In extreme cases, veterinarians can administer antibiotic therapy and anti-inflammatory medications.

The majority of canine patients with uncomplicated ear infections heal within 1–2 weeks following the initiation of appropriate therapy.

Prevention

Prevention is always favored when it comes to the vast majority of diseases.

Susceptibility to chronic ear infections in dogs is often the result of immune system deficiencies and poor gut health/ gut flora.

Unlike the continuous, systemic benefits provided by dog probiotics, antibiotics may relieve an ear infection temporarily but do nothing for the root cause of the infection. That’s why many dog owners are turning to probiotics for dogs with ear infections to naturally and successfully eliminate recurring ear infections in their canine best friend.

Probiotics gently and naturally eliminate infection-producing bacteria while restoring healthy levels of good bacteria in the dog’s body
